Domestic Violence Awareness

Alpha Chi Omega promotes educational and prevention efforts to eliminate domestic violence by supporting programs designed to understand the problem, assist and protect the victims, and work for the well-being of all victims of domestic violence. Our chapter works with the Houston Area Women's Center.

The Houston Area Women's Center helps individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence in their efforts to move their lives forward. The center provides shelter, counseling and advocacy to support them in building lives free from the effects of violence. Our goal is to help the HAWC eliminate the burdens and obstacles victims face by holding fundraising events or drives on campus. A few chapter members have even been trained to volunteer in childcare at the center while the moms go to counseling or receive legal aide.

If you or someone you care about is experiencing relationship or sexual abuse, please reach out to authorities or the Houston Area Womens Center. The HAWC can discuss safety planning, shelter options, accompany you to the hospital, provide childcare, and many other services, all free of charge.

The HAWCs domestic violence hotline is (713)528-2121 and rape crisis hotline is (713)528-7273.

Support the HAWC: urgent and ongoing needs

How Iota Pi Helps

Members of Iota Pi volunteering at the 2016 HAWC Walk.

A newer tradition we have started at HBU is our Purple Ribbon Week during October (Domestic Violence Awareness Month). Each day we host an event on campus that promotes domestic violence awareness and prevention while fundraising for the HAWC. Our signature event is the Chili Cook Off where HBU organizations compete to win Best Chili.

For Healthy Relationships Week in February we aim to promote what characterizes a healthy relationship versus a toxic, unhealthy one. We also celebrated healthy relationships on Valentines Day by selling Crush sodas to give to your crush and we passed out goodie bags of 4 Hersheys kisses- 1 purple and 3 silver, signifying the 1 in 4 women who will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

Every year, our chapter volunteers or runs in the HAWCs annual Race Against Violence 5k Walk/Run in March. This is a huge fundraiser for the HAWC who offers all of its services free of charge for their clients. This past year the race had 2,095 participants and was able to raise over $275,000!

We also partnered up with the Student Government Association for Safety Day right before Spring Break to educate on sexual assault awareness. Alpha Chi Omega and the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity also put on a free self-defense class taught by the the HBU Bradshaw Center Jiu Jitsu instructor, Professor Tillman.

In April, we teamed up with the Psychology Honor Society, Psi Chi, to put on an Escalation Workshop from the One Love Foundation. The workshop included an award-winning film that followed a seemingly perfect couples relationship that quickly escalated to a dangerous one. After the film there was a discussion group that highlighted the signs of an unhealthy relationship, and what to do if you are a loved one is in that situation. To support the Nursing Student Association, Alpha Chi Omega also collected toys for Ben Taub Hospital to comfort children who are getting rape kits done. In recognizing April as sexual assault awareness month, we made 100 packages of makeup and spa items for the women at the HAWC. This was made possible by a generous donor who gave over $20,000 worth of items! We hope it gives the women a boost of confidence and empowers them!
